Hobart, Feb. 21: Australia continued their hold over West Indies with a 38-run win in the first Twenty20 international in Hobart. Having won the one-day series 4-0, the Aussies posted 179-8, with opener David Warner firing six fours and two sixes in his 49 off 32 balls.

The Windies lost skipper Chris Gayle in the second over and by the end of the fourth they had slipped to 26-4. Runako Morton (40) and Denesh Ramdin (44) shared 73 but fell in successive balls as the tourists closed on 141-8.

Warner and Shane Watson (37, 19b) gave the Australians a fine start with an opening stand of 83 in 47 balls, Watson firing four sixes. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin then had a spell of a four and two sixes in three balls to ensure the Australians of a challenging total.

The crowd were briefly treated to the spectacle of Gayle against explosive fast bowler Shaun Tait, who was immediately up in the mid 90mph region. Sadly it only lasted four balls, Gayle whipping the first of them in cavalier fashion to the square-leg boundary but then seeing his stumps dismantled when attempting a similar shot to a delivery timed at 93mph.

Deonarine edged the next ball to first slip, and after Lendl Simmons sliced Dirk Nannes to third man, Tait claimed his third wicket in his next over when Kieron Pollard edged a fine delivery that moved away.

Ramdin was denied a half century as he holed out to long-off, before Morton fell next ball to give Nannes his third wicket as Steve Smith timed his leap superbly on the boundary and maintained his balance as he took the ball above his head.

Brief scores: Australia 179/ 8 in 20 overs (David Warner 49, Brad Haddin 37 n.o.; Dwayne Smith 2-38, Chris Gayle 2/15) bt West Indies 141/8 in 20 overs (Runako Morton 40, Dinesh Ramdin 44; Dirk Nannes 3/21, Shaun Tait 3/30).
